Albert II is a regnal name and designation used by several prominent monarchs, nobles, and historical figures, most notably the current Prince of Monaco and the former King of the Belgians, as well as a Holy Roman Emperor and a pioneering space-faring primate.

Albert II, Prince of Monaco

Born on March 14, 1958, Albert II (Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre) is the reigning Prince of Monaco, having ascended the throne in 2005 following the death of his father, Rainier III. He is the second child and only son of Rainier III and American actress Grace Kelly. Before his accession, he represented Monaco in various international sporting events, including five Winter Olympic Games in bobsleigh. As Prince, Albert II has been highly active in environmental causes, establishing the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in 2006 to combat climate change, promote renewable energy, and protect biodiversity. He married South African former swimmer Charlene Wittstock in 2011.

Albert II of Belgium

Albert II (Albert Félix Humbert Théodore Christian Marie Eugène) was born on June 11, 1934, and reigned as the King of the Belgians from 1993 until his abdication in 2013. He was the second son of King Leopold III and Queen Astrid. Albert II ascended to the throne following the death of his older brother, King Baudouin. His reign was marked by the transformation of Belgium into a federal state, the celebration of the country's linguistic and cultural diversity, and his efforts to maintain national unity during political crises. He abdicated in 2013 in favor of his son, Philippe, citing his advanced age and declining health.

Albert II, Holy Roman Emperor

Albert II (1397–1439) was a member of the House of Habsburg who served as King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, and King of the Romans, making him the Holy Roman Emperor-elect. He was the son of Albert IV, Duke of Austria, and Joanna Sophia of Bavaria. Albert II married Elizabeth of Luxembourg, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund, which significantly elevated his political standing. His reign was brief and dominated by the Hussite Wars and the ongoing conflict with the Ottoman Empire. He died of dysentery in 1439 while on a military campaign against the Ottomans, leading to a prolonged interregnum in the Holy Roman Empire.

Albert II, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach

Albert II (1526–1557) was the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach from 1543 until his death. He was the son of Margrave George the Pious. Known for his extravagant lifestyle and financial mismanagement, Albert II faced significant conflicts with the estates of his margraviate and the Holy Roman Emperor. His reign was characterized by internal strife and the accumulation of massive debts, which eventually led to the intervention of the imperial authorities and the administration of his territories by his creditors.

Albert II (space monkey)

Albert II was a rhesus macaque monkey who, on June 14, 1949, became the second primate to fly in space and the first to reach the edge of space, achieving an altitude of 134 kilometers (83 miles). He flew aboard a V-2 rocket launched from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. While Albert II survived the launch and reached space, he died upon impact when the parachute of his recovery capsule failed to deploy. His flight was a significant, albeit tragic, milestone in the early history of space exploration and biomedical research.
