Actrius

Actrius (Catalan for "actresses"; released in international markets under the English title Actresses) is a 1997 Catalan-language drama film directed by Ventura Pons. Adapted by Pons from the stage play E.R. by the Catalan playwright Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, the film features an almost entirely female cast composed of four of Catalonia's leading actresses — Núria Espert, Rosa Maria Sardà, Anna Lizaran and Mercè Pons — portraying performers of three successive generations. Its plot centres on a young actress preparing to embody a legendary, recently deceased stage star on screen, and on the three older actresses who recount their memories of the diva and, in the process, of their own lives in the theatre. Widely praised on release, Actrius is generally regarded as one of the defining works of 1990s Catalan-language cinema and one of the most accomplished films of Pons's prolific career.

Background and production

Ventura Pons (1945–2021) was born in Barcelona and began his career as a theatre director in the late 1960s, working in both Barcelona and London. He made his debut in cinema with the documentary Ocaña, retrat intermitent (1978), which was screened at Cannes, but he devoted much of the following decade to the stage. In 1985 he founded the production company Els Films de la Rambla, and his return to feature filmmaking produced a series of commercially and critically successful Catalan-language films, most notably Què t'hi jugues, Mari Pili? (1991). By the mid-1990s Pons had established himself as the leading figure of contemporary Catalan cinema, a position consolidated by a dense run of adaptations of Catalan theatrical works in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The source of Actrius was E.R., a play written by Josep Maria Benet i Jornet (1940–2020), one of the most performed Catalan dramatists of his generation. The play revolves around the figure of a mythical actress, seen indirectly through the people whose lives she touched. Pons translated this material to the screen with a deliberately intimate, chamber-scale production, shot largely in interiors in Barcelona and built around a four-actress ensemble. The film was produced by Els Films de la Rambla and released in Spain in 1997, with all dialogue in Catalan — a notable statement at a time when major Catalan-language productions rarely commanded casts of such national stature.
